Types of Sedation Dentistry

Many patients become nervous or fearful about going to the dentist, but you don’t have to feel anxious or afraid for your next appointment. At Creekside Dental, we offer several levels of sedation to help you have a relaxed and comfortable experience. Your level of anxiety depends on you, as some patients need sedation more than others. We can discuss your needs and make a recommendation based on your medical history and treatment recommendations. All sedation is administered by a licensed dentist who monitors your status throughout the procedure. There are several types of sedation available depending on your needs.

Who Should Get Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can help patients overcome their fear and anxiety about going to the dentist to receive the essential dental care they need to maintain good oral health. Some patients who typically benefit from sedation dentistry include those with sensitive teeth, undergoing lengthy procedures such as root canals, or feeling anxious about visiting the dentist. Patients who need to undergo oral surgery may also benefit from sedation dentistry as it can help make the process smoother and more comfortable overall. With sedation dentistry, patients can receive their dental care without experiencing any discomfort or stress. This often allows patients to finish more treatment in one visit, saving them time and hassle. Additionally, sedation dentistry can help to reduce the need for extractions and restorations.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Oral Conscious Sedation

This treatment is recommended for patients with mild anxiety about visiting the dentist. Typically, it’s administered as a pill one hour before your procedure. It takes effect quickly and wears off quickly once your procedure is over. As a result, most patients can return to work immediately after their appointment.

Nitrous Oxide Gas

Nitrous oxide sedation is the most common form of sedation dentistry because it offers minimal discomfort during the procedure and is simple to administer. You will be asked to breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a mask placed over your nose. The gas is safe for adults and children and wears off quickly once the procedure is over, making it even more effective for lengthy procedures such as multiple wisdom teeth extractions.

IV Moderate Sedation

Our skilled dentist administers IV moderate sedation intravenously to give you a deeper level of relaxation while you’re with us. Like with oral conscious sedation, IV moderate sedation allows you to respond to requests as needed, but many patients report feeling as though they have fallen asleep during their procedure. This type of sedation is suitable for those with moderate to high anxiety or those receiving lengthy treatments such as full mouth reconstruction.
